Plot and Setting

Parvana is set in Kabul, Afghanistan under the extreme Taliban regime. The Taliban ban women from going outside without a man and declare that all women must be covered up with a burqua.

Parvana’s father works in the marketplace as a letter reader and writer. One evening, whilst Parvana and her family were eating dinner a group of Taliban soldiers burst through the door and brutally arrest her father for having an education.

The arrest of her father sent her mother into a state of depression and stress; she lied on the toshak for several days and completely shut down from reality. Fortunately, Parvana ran into an old family friend named Mrs. Weera. She was kind enough to move in with the distressed family and help them to gain hope and endure the harsh circumstances.

Parvana is a heart wrenching story about the main character, an eleven year old girl who’s forced to help her family survive. Parvana suffers many hardships and challenges, but never gives up hope. She is her father’s Malali (strong, brave fighter).
